Brezovica\u00a0(German:\u00a0Bresowitz bei Laibach)) is a municipality in central\u00a0Slovenia, just south of its capital\u00a0Ljubljana. It has approximately 9,300 inhabitants. Its administrative centre is the settlement of Brezovica pri Ljubljani. It is the central municipality in the\u00a0Ljubljansko barje\u00a0marshland\u00a0area. The entire municipality is part of the traditional region of\u00a0Inner Carniola\u00a0and is now included in the\u00a0Central Slovenia statistical region. To the east, it borders with the Municipalities of\u00a0Ljubljana\u00a0and\u00a0 Ig . To the south, it borders the municipality of\u00a0 Cerknica , to the west with\u00a0 Borovnica \u00a0and\u00a0 Vrhnika \u00a0and to the north with the Municipality of\u00a0 Dobrova-Polhov Gradec >.<\/p>\n
Geographically it is rather diverse, containing thirty square kilometres of the Barje marshland, with its isolated “sunken” hills, a section of the\u00a0 Ljubljanica \u00a0river, a\u00a0siphonic karst\u00a0lake; located just outside Jezero \u00a0and the\u00a0 Rakitna \u00a0Plateau\u00a0with a lake and sixty square kilometres of forest.<\/p>\n
History<\/p>\n
The area has been inhabited since ancient times. People known as\u00a0The Lake Dwellers, described by the Slovene writer\u00a0Janez Jalen\u00a0in his novel\u00a0Bobri\u00a0(Beavers), arrived when the marshland was still covered by a lake. Later, the area covered by the present Municipality was crossed by\u00a0Roman roads, traces of which are still visible, near Rakitna for example. The Ljubljanica river was navigated by boatmen. The Romans\u00a0redirected it towards Podpe\u010d, a village known for its good quality stone. The nearby forests and the settlements proximity to Ljubljana, have positively influenced the development of\u00a0agriculture, trade and enterprise in the area. Many old crafts, such as lime, stone and wood processing, and wickerwork have survived till the present day.<\/p>\n
The stone in Podpe\u010d, so called “Podpe\u010d Marble”, was used in many famous monuments in Ljubljana by the architect\u00a0 Jo\u017ee Ple\u010dnik , such as the\u00a0National and University Library of Slovenia. The quarry is now protected and only smaller excavations are allowed.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0parish church\u00a0in\u00a0 Brezovica \u00a0is dedicated to\u00a0Saint Anthony the Hermit\u00a0and belongs to the\u00a0Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ljubljana. It is first mentioned in written documents dating to 1526, but the current building dates to the second half of the 19th century.<\/p>\n
